Ah, The Cold Season

Tis the season to hack up a lung while attempting to get a good night's rest, or perhaps to develop pink eye as your spouse did only a short week and a half ago. Ah... the latter hasn't happened but I am not looking forward to going to work today and attempting not to hack out a lung or sneeze out my brains. Yum!

I did return to work yesterday and had a decent time, this morning I seem to be a bit sicker than I was then (secretly I was hoping I was getting better). At least I had a decent time, I even attempted to buy a new address book at Barnes & Noble after work (no dice, they only had two address books even there and neither were awesome).

In other news, my Christmas went well and the dinner I (mostly) cooked went wonderfully! Granted, I had a decent amount of help with the in-laws and my parents present. It was a lot of fun and everybody had a good time!

Well it's 6am here, time for me to head to work. I was up at 5am cause I couldn't breathe without hacking in bed, ahhhh, good times.

Hey 10,

Looks like you have what I had. Maybe stay home tomorrow so that you can recover and NOT GIVE IT TO EVERYONE!!! Hey there's a thot of LOVE. ;)

I found that tylenol and sudafed really helped in the breathing dept. and lots of Ricolas and just a tad robutusin DM - like I gave you when you were a kid. Then also stay away from you spouse at all costs.

I hope you take tomorrow off so that you can be raring to go on Monday. But if you can't I understand ... Thor - your second cousin said that his co-workers asked him to stay home ... I'm sure he was hacking up a lung too.

Love you and take it easy ...
M

Everybody always tells me to go home when I'm sick, but I refuse because there are three or four who complain about it when I do.

I recommend DayQuil and NightQuil. I sleep like a baby on the nyquil and feel better with the dayquil. I used to use Advil Cold and Sinus (and it was awesome), but I refuse to go to the pharmacy to sign for it. There is no reason why the federal government needs to know about my NON-PRESCRIPTION cold medicine use. :)

I hope you feel better soon. There's nothing like Vicks Formula 44 for nighttime coughing. As to the pink eye, make sure he washes his hands a lot. Give him his own glass, silverware, handtowel, etc. And pray a lot because pink eye is really contagious.

Lo, there kind of is a reason the govt needs to know. It is to try and minimize meth production. Psuedoephedrine is the ingredient used to make the drug and you have to have your drivers license number recorded when anything that contains it is purchased. There is also a limit on how much a person can buy. The problem is that there is no central system to keep track of it so a meth maker can just go from store to store buying PE in small amounts.

yeah we know that, but it's the whole issue of a few ruined it for the many. i dont like the idea of Big Brother watching me, and this is just one more way they can. if at all possible, i also try to stay away from the behind-the-counter stuff. plus, when you think about it, the stuff on the shelves is tamer and prolly not quite as bad for you. :o)

when i was really sick last week, i came into work b/c i had a shitton to do. i have my own cube, and so i brought in cough drops, dayquil and hand sanitizer. i tried to have a clean kleenex on hand at all times so if i needed to open a door, i wouldnt have to use my grungy hands. if i have to go in, i try to make sure i dont spread it around. but my philosophy is if at all i can stay home, i will, b/c it will get you healthy faster.

oh, and hooray for vitamin c tablets!! get better soon 10!

Big Brother isn't actually watching, they just want you to think that they are. CVS actually just records it in a notebook and that's it. No database, no govt reporting, nothing. It is only used if the cops come knocking trying to trace down a meth crime.

10, the best stuff I've found to work for a sickness like the one you described is the old Sudafed in the orange box. It was the old (more potent) formulation and the orange box kind contains an expectorant to help your lungs clear themselves out faster.

Hey Lo and Gonzo or is that Dr. Gonzo, Since you are from the midwest you are so far - but soon to be unaware of the Meth problem that is prevelent in the West Coast and spreading east. It's really bad here in Washington state and the stuff in sudafed and other meds are used to make it. People used to be able to buy boxes and boxes and then to manufacture it - sometimes with babies walking around in the filth of the manufacturing. There are houses east of Everett that were used for the manufacture of this henious drug.

Pardon my spelling - but meth is the worst and has ruined many lives - IF THE FEDS WANT TO KNOW HOW MANY SUDAFEDS THAT I'VE BOT - have at it. ;) I've signed for one box last May. And I was glad cause it worked better than the stuff you can buy from the aisle.

I think Ten must not feel well cause she's not answered any of these posts.

God bless,
M

Here's more about meth use in Wyoming: http://methkillswyoming.org/

If you're interested in seeing the affects of this horrible drug - which has not made it to a state near you. I can see all sorts of former meth users on psychiatric drugs to boost their dopamine in their brains. Makes you crazy - meth does.

M

A) Feel better soon, 10.

B) Meth has been in the midwest for quite some time. Longer than this PBS/Frontline link claims, in fact, because it was around while I was in high school. I am well aware of the physical and mental effects.(http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/meth/map/)

C) The regulations have not decreased the demand, merely the number of meth lab busts in the U.S. According to PBS.org/Frontline, "65% of all meth consumed in the United States now comes from Mexican drug cartels..." (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/meth/etc/updmexico.html) (The posted date for this article appears to be 2006 even though most of the stats are from 2003 and 2004.)

Meth has been a problem in MN for a long time, enough that we actually had more strict regulations in place before the federal ones were created. Unfortunately it seems restricting stuff like this just pushes people to steal it (as they already do with car batteries and anhydrous ammonia), causing more problems (especially with the anhydrous - evacuating parts of cities until it dissipates). :(

another "big brother" question i've discussed of late is the new "open tolling" here in IL. a big horse-shoe shaped thingy crosses the 4 lane highway and you have an I-Pass (same as EZ-Pass, & the other thngs they have out there). instead of waiting in line at a toll booth, you buzz through. it's glorious.

side note: they are trying to coordinate all Passes so you can go through any toll state w/o stopping to count your quarters!

but, consequently, the technology is there for these open tolls to track your speed. i figure, it's only a matter of time before they start taking pictures of offenders and mailing tickets. many of my friends believe this would be too hard for the state to pass, as it's shooting fish in a pond. i say, we live in IL, buckaroos - they'll squeeze blood out of us in any way they can.

Well I am still alive, at least I am sure if you are still feeling pain you are alive, and my lungs are still intact though I am not sure how much longer they will remain there. I am not sure if you can give yourself an apolexy by coughing, but if so I am in danger of it.

Seeings as how this has become a discussion about big brother and meth, I will have to agree with Jeff that big brother isn't watching. I mean, the collect a lot of information, but I don't think they look at it all. They just have the information in case they need to build a case against you. It's just like your credit cards, they track your spending too and are able to access all those records. And the cards you use in stores like Rainbow/Safeway/ect track what kind of coupons they may mail to your house and they also track your purchases. However when it comes to making money, I put nothing past their creativity and will continue to assume they are trying to find a way to give me a ticket anytime I speed, don't stop completely, or run a red light.

I have another concern about this cold season, why must I watch commericals with gross green 'mucus-y' characters? They do not induce me to purchase anything, in fact I am pretty sure I will not buy mucinex or afrin now, or perhaps ever.

Hi Ten,
Glad you are back online - I did about dislocate a rib with all that coughing and laying in bed - I think the laying in bed is the worst. But it must be. I hope you feel better soon. Yesh - those commercials are horrible when you have mucus already to deal with ... yuck!!

Hope you have a HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
Love,
m

I know this thread has long since died but I've been on vacation for awhile...

I just wanted to comment on the ammonia comment of Jeremy. While Co-ops and farmers are getting better at protecting the supply, meth "cooks" a lot of times manufacture their own ammonia.
