My Crowning Glory

I know you are all thinking of my glorious hair right now. It is pretty amazing - especially when it actually does what I want it to. Too bad the white hairs are slowly invading it... so when I have to give up and dye, what color should I go? Lighter or Darker? I am voting for medium brown with low-lights. Hopefully I have a few more years though.

Anyway, I wasn't talking about my marvelous hair, but instead about the actual shiny new crown I found out I am getting. This crown is pretty expensive, so I actually have to wait until next year to have it installed - and it's all the fault of a damn tootsie pop! That's right, I get to have a tooth crowned! Weeee!

About 6-8 weeks ago I was trying to see how many licks it took to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. However, like the owl, I am waaay too impatient, plus it was a chocolate Tootsie Pop and those aren't that great, I bit down to get to the center - AND I cracked my tooth (though I didn't know it at the time) and thought 'ouch, that kinda hurt'. Cut to a couple weeks later, my tooth is hurting (not unusally for molar #4) and I look in the mirror and my tooth is gray-ish! Since I know I have an appointment in a few weeks I didn't freak out too bad, also another dentist had told me 'root canal' for that tooth before. But all I have to get is a crown (apparently you can do this without a root canal) and it will be pretty and shiny. Of course I am not getting it until January when my insurance rolls over because I don't have any funds left due to the wisdom teeth. In order to keep my tooth healthy until them my dentist is going to 'build up' the tooth (ie seal the bacteria inside, it can't grow without oxygen).

Lucky me, the 'build up' happens tomorrow at 12pm. I just hope there's no novacain involved.

theres tottally going to be novicain invovled. There was when I had that done. Although They filled like five cavities and the enormous hole in my tooth. I didn't have to get a crown though, bt my tooth is not brown at least not that one. I had to get a root canal because my brother kicked me in the face.. now that tooth is brown, but I don't liek the denist.

So you're going to work or what? Taking the day off? I would think that there would be no novacaine because there's probably no drilling needed - as it's a dead tooth - there would be no feeling in it or little anyway.

Pray everything goes well - Love, Mom

Ick. Sorry about that. I just went to my dentist last week. No insurance, which stunk. But my dentist is my friend (but doesn't own her own practice, so friend does not equal cheaper care). I got two cavities fixed. It cost as much as the scheduled 90,000 mile maintence on my car, which, by the way, I completed as you had had such good luck with it, and you're right, the car runs so much smoother. Anyway, my dentist, because she's my friend, chatted away with me and the assistant while she drilled. Unfortunately, it's hard to carry on a conversation with a drill in your mouth. So, she'd drill, talk, and then, ten minutes later, I'd give my two-cents on the topic. Good times.

I suggest treating yourself with a shake when it's all done. And not with a tootsie roll.

Did you have the dam in too? because my dr uses this 'dam' he puts around my teeth and then i don't have to taste my tooth when he is drilling. It's great, but it's impossible to talk cause your mouth is completely full of it.

I love dental insurance, but I wonder if it will go the way of vision insurance? Where you only get 200 bucks to spend a year...

oh lord, i get that at my dentist too. it's a practice that has been serving my family since pre-me, so they ask about everything from my bff to my new shoes. i must say, though, that dr jourdan is pretty adept at deciphering speech muddled by tooth instruments.

I am happy to report your visit didn't involve novicaine. :) They use lidocaine these days instead of novicaine, but patients don't really pay attention to that.

I don't remember what she used... She numbed me really good though.
We talked yesterday, and a friend shared a story of her uncle who had eaten a hamburger after going to get a cavity out, against the doctor's recommendation. Anyway, he THOUGHT he was chewing on a particularily tough piece of meat...
I don't think his tongue will ever be the same.
That's why I recommend the shake. My dentist, incidentally, does too, "just brush really well afterwards."

People need MORE dental insurance these days - so I don't think it will go the way of vision.

Our vision insurance benefits was - a pair of lenses a year but a pair of frames every 2 years. Which is logical unless you have Roland for a son and then you end up paying for a few a year - UGH!! ;)

How's your tooth feeling afterwards - fine?
Love,
Mom

So HATE THAT DAM and won't let the dr. use that again in me. :) Glad it doesn't freak you out!
